- (b) Per Rule 11-4 [Playing from Outside the Teeing Ground], the penalty is two strokes in stroke play, but there is no penalty in match play. However, in match play, the opponent may immediately require the player to cancel the stroke and play a ball from within the teeing ground. The other three choices are all one-stroke penalty situations in both match play and stroke play. See Rules 28 [Ball Unplayable], 18-2 [Ball at Rest Moved by Player …], and 26 [Water Hazards].
- (a) Each of these situations involve adjustments, e.g., either one or two holes in match play or two or four strokes in stroke play upon discovery of the breach. When and how these adjustments are made depend upon when the breach is discovered. If the breach for carrying too many clubs is discovered between the play of two holes, it is deemed to have been discovered during play of the hole just completed. For the other three choices, if the breach is discovered between the play of two holes, it is deemed to have been discovered during play of the next hole, and the penalty must be applied accordingly. See Rules 4-4 [Maximum of Fourteen Clubs], 6-4 [Caddie], 4-1 [Form and Make of Clubs], and 4-2 [Playing Characteristics Changed and Foreign Material].
- (d) Of the four choices, only the failure to sign the score card is an automatic disqualification. The other three are “must correct” situations. In other words, only if the player does not correct the mistake before making a stroke on the next teeing ground, or in the case of the last hole of the round, before he leaves the putting green, is the player disqualified. See Rules 3-2 [Failure to Hole Out], 15-3b [Wrong Ball], 11-4a [Playing from Outside Teeing Ground], and 6-6b [Signing and Returning Score Card].
4. (a) Per Rule 15-3a [Wrong Ball], the penalty for playing a wrong ball in match play is loss of hole. The other three choices are all one-stroke penalties in match play. See Rules 18-3b [Ball at Rest Moved by Opponent … Other Than During Search], 14-4 [Striking the Ball More Than Once], and 27 [Ball Lost or Out of Bounds].
